India’s CPCB Urges Immediate Registration on Used Oil EPR Portal
Stakeholders given 15-day deadline to comply with new regulations
In a latest news article in F+L Asia, India’s Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has issued an urgent directive for stakeholders to register on the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Portal for Used Oil within 15 days. The notice, dated February 17, 2025, was sent to all State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) and Pollution Control Committees (PCCs), highlighting low registration numbers since the portal’s launch in June 2024.
Mandatory Compliance Under New EPR Rules
The directive follows amendments to India’s Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2023, which introduced Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Used Oil. Effective from April 1, 2024, the regulations require base oil and lubricant producers, as well as importers of used oil, to meet recycling targets by purchasing EPR certificates from registered recyclers.
“As per Rule 37(2)(i) of the amended regulations, SPCBs and PCCs must enforce compliance with the used oil EPR framework,” stated B. Babu, Scientist ‘F’ and Head of Waste Management-II at CPCB.
The initiative aims to enhance accountability in used oil management, ensuring environmental sustainability and compliance with national waste management standards. Stakeholders are urged to register promptly via the EPR portal or consult their respective SPCBs for further details.
