Mercantile & Maritime Group Launches Middle East’s Largest Biofuel Facility

UAE’s New Biofuel Facility to Produce 150 Million Litres of SAF Annually, Strengthening Its Role in Green Aviation Fuel

Abu Dhabi: Mercantile & Maritime Group, a global leader in energy and logistics, has announced the expansion of its MENA Terminals in Fujairah, establishing the largest biofuel processing facility in the Middle East. Valued at AED 2.2 billion, the new facility will occupy over 1 million square feet and is projected for completion by 2026. Once operational, it will produce up to 150 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually—representing nearly 10% of current global SAF production.

This landmark project strengthens the UAE’s position as a leader in green aviation fuel, aligning with the country’s Net Zero 2050 initiative and carbon reduction goals. Mercantile & Maritime CEO, Murtaza Lakhani, expressed gratitude to the UAE’s leadership and to His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah, for their support. “Fujairah’s strategic location makes it ideal for this facility, which will significantly reduce the need for SAF imports, lower carbon emissions, and minimize environmental impact across the supply chain,” Lakhani noted.

The SAF processing plant will integrate advanced AI systems to enhance refinery operations and maintenance, ensuring peak efficiency and adherence to international standards set by IATA, CORSIA, and RED III. The facility’s output will primarily serve local markets through the UAE rail network, with future plans for regional distribution, reducing transportation-related emissions.

MENA Terminals is showcasing this groundbreaking project at ADIPEC 2024 from November 4-7 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, where visitors can explore a 3D model of the new facility at their stand in Hall 1.
